At least one person was killed and two more seriously injured after a speeding truck overturned and plunged into a pond in Kampong Thom province’s Santuk district on Monday afternoon, an accident an official attributed to a “sleepy” driver, who fled the scene.
“The vehicle was not malfunctioning. The engine, car system, brake, wheels, gears were all okay,” said Siv Sovanna, Santuk district deputy traffic chief.
“The traffic accident [was probably] caused by a speeding driver who was sleepy,” he said. “The vehicle might have overturned because the driver stepped on the brake.”
Sovanna added that, according to witnesses, the white and blue Hyundai truck was seen speeding from south to north before overturning on its own and falling into the pond, drowning a man who was trapped in the vehicle and injuring two, who had since been sent to the hospital.
“The authorities have identified the driver of the vehicle as Sok Suthleng, 52,” he said. “He is the uncle of the dead victim.”
The truck has been impounded at Santuk district police station.
